Devils out saints in

AREVALO (Agencies) : Holy Name of Jesus parish in Arevalo, Iloilo, replaced the popular Halloween festival of ghouls, goons and ghosts, with a Procession of Saints on October 31.

Parish priest, Monsignor Amadeo Escañan, told CBCP News that the genuine meaning of Halloween is the festival of all holy men. He lamented that the modern celebration of Halloween, which is usually confined to upmarket villages and shopping malls, has degenerated into an over-commercialised event.

As an alternative, the parish event-organisers prepared a solemn and fun-filled celebration for children and their parents on October 31.

A procession of saints featuring 50 children from the 10 barangays of the parish—each representing a particular saint—made its way through the streets of Arevalo.

The Parade of Saints was followed by games, a drum and bugle presentation, candy treats and the community singing of the 2015 Papal Visit theme song, We are all God’s children.
