Widow of misidentified slain man calls for justice

BARCELONA (Agencies) : The wife of the slain hog breeder in Barcelona, Sorsogon called for justice for the killing of her husband and assistance for the education of their children.

Arlyne Estrabela was quoted by the CBCP News on June 16 as saying that her husband, Salvador Estrabela, in his fifties, was shot by unidentified gunmen in the chest at around 8.30pm on February 11 in what she believes to be a case of mistaken identity. Her husband then asked her to rush him to the nearest hospital, and revealed that during a drinking spree with two friends in his home in barangay Tagdon, one of the perpetrators approached him and held him by the shoulder after several shots.

Si Salvador Estrabela ako,” Arlyne quoted her husband as saying. “Wala akong atraso sa inyo.” (I am Salvador Estrabela. I did you no wrong.)

Arlyne said the man suddenly let go of Salvador’s shoulder upon hearing it and fled with his companion on a motorcycle.

A local who refused to be named also said the killers may have confused Salvador for someone else. He said he believes the gunman, who approached the victim to confirm his identity, was supposed to fire another bullet to ensure immediate death.

Samuel Gacosta, a friend of the victim, was also fired at when he tried to pursue the gunmen. He sustained minor injuries.

Recovered at the scene were six empty shells, five live ammunitions, a magazine from .45 caliber pistol, and a pair of sunglasses.

Salvador went through intensive care in a Sorsogon hospital, but passed away after several days.

The victim left six children behind whom he sustained mainly by breeding pigs in Barcelona and nearby towns. Three are in college.
